Great lead vocal or feature instrument clean preamp option - different from the rest of the Unison pres
I like this preamp as a clean, warm, rich unit. It sounds different from the rest of the Unison pres and fits what I'm looking for a lot of the time, especially for lead vocal - a clean, warm, modern, colourful (more harmonic richness than the 88rs), yet not overly aggressive (such as the 1073/610) nor compressed (as the API often feels to me, even without compression engaged) sound. I found this to fill the niche that was missing in the lineup of Unison preamps - a great feature preamp for a clean lead vocal.
I would say in regards to other comments of 'smearing' that it's more about the settings for me. I think that the compression is 'on' and limiting is 'on' as the default setting is a choice I might have done differently. Both the compression and the limiting (moreso) change the sound and colour. I found what I was looking for by starting with those bypassed.
Possibly my favourite feature is the transformer. I think I'll always leave it in, but it's gratifying being able to hear what it sounds like without.
The compression and de-essing are very good. Manley nailed it with the 3:1 ratio. The compressor can kick in very subtly without seeing anything on the GR meter, just enough for some mojo and magic and smoothness. The compressor section changes the tone and colour a bit just being engaged without compression, which can be a great thing. With the de-esser section, I was confused a bit by the 'limit' thing on the de-ess knob because I have never used the hardware unit, but figured it out pretty quick. Otherwise, the de-esser is very transparent.
As with most of their sims, in my case, I'm not rating it comparing to hardware units (that said, I've had to match other hardware preamps in the past with the sims because of things that were tracked in another studio on gear that I didn't have on hand - with a touch of eq, it's been pretty easy to do as their sims are really close) - I'm looking for 'real world' usability, and this one knocks it out of the park - a boutique mic pre for a fraction of the price that I can put on every channel (if I'm inclined).

Feels like an analog comp
I'll admit it - I'm not a great mixer. Back in my tape and board days, I used to rent a real SSL Bus Compressor that magically evened everything out (both levels and tones). I've tried almost every compressor plugin made. This one finally brings me back to those days. Thanks UA!

wasn't sure if the upgrade is worth it...
but now I can tell the upgrade was worth every penny. The Rev A is now my go to compressor! I love the way this one sounds, no comparison to the legacy edition.

Classic for a reason. Excellent for keys, anything that can use subtle movement. Never in the way, often the "thing" that adds the "something".

My dbx compressors can stay in storage for awhile!
I have 3 hardware dbx compressors that I was thinking about pulling out of storage for my setup. After mixing a session with the UAD plugin version of the 160, they can stay in storage for a while! This plugin is amazing! All of the punch that I've come to know and love from dbx compressors, is ready to go in this plugin! Squashing my kicks and snares, just like old times! And special thanks to Universal Audio for the great coupon....the plugin was on sale at the time, and with coupon, I got it for FREE!!! Looking forward to purchasing more plugins in the future! Classic, Elegant and Fun
This plugin has already become indispensable. It has been a long time since I have had a Pultec style EQ in my arsenal. This one is amazing. By far the best plugin emulation I have heard.

Blows the Waves API 2500 away!
This is such a great compressor. Nothing punches quite like it. The UAD API 2500 comes so much closer to the hardware unit than the Waves version. Still, I think both come a pinch short of the smack you can get out of the hardware. Despite this, the UAD API 2500 sounds stunning and I will be using it on every mix.

This is a deep plugin.
I have a couple of other tape and saturation plugins, but this one goes deeper than many of the others. I use Slate VTM (which I love), but the UAD Studer gives me a different color to work with. I like the way it saturates when pushed on the 456 setting. I have used Studer A800's a lot and this plugin does a nice job of imparting that familiar character.

Good UA Tape sim
This is an excellent tape sim and very affordable. It doesn't touch the Ampex or Studer in capabilities but offers a lot for little. This is a good place to start if you want some tape sound but don't have a ton of money for the brand name machines. I still throw it on tracks even though I own the others. A great deal!
